March is Colorectal cancer awareness month. This month, we should highlight the importance of screening with an occult blood test and colonoscopy. In addition to screening, related symptoms and diseases are worth keeping in mind.

Haemorrhoids are a common condition that affects many people at some point in their lives. They can be either internal or external and are caused by swollen veins in the rectal area. While most cases of haemorrhoids can be treated with simple lifestyle changes and over-the-counter remedies, some people may choose not to seek treatment for their condition.
For several reasons, someone might choose not to seek treatment for their haemorrhoids. Some people may feel embarrassed or ashamed about their condition, while others may believe their symptoms will disappear alone. However, untreated haemorrhoids can lead to more severe health problems down the line.
One of the most common complications of untreated haemorrhoids is chronic pain. As the swollen veins continue to pressure the surrounding tissue, patients may experience discomfort and pain regularly. This can make it difficult to sit or stand for long periods, leading to decreased mobility and quality of life.
Untreated haemorrhoids can also lead to bleeding and infection. As the swollen veins become more irritated, they can rupture and bleed. This can cause significant blood loss and can lead to anaemia if left unchecked. In addition, the open wounds created by bleeding haemorrhoids can also become infected, leading to further health problems.
In some cases, untreated haemorrhoids can even lead to the development of cancer. While this is rare, patients must understand the potential risks of ignoring their symptoms. Patients who notice any changes in their bowel movements, such as blood in the stool or changes in frequency, should seek medical attention immediately.

Chronic pain and discomfort can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression, and patients may begin to isolate themselves from social situations due to embarrassment or shame.
In conclusion, while ignoring haemorrhoid symptoms and hoping they go away independently may be tempting, this is not a recommended course of action. Without proper treatment, haemorrhoids can lead to chronic pain, bleeding, infection, and even cancer. Therefore, patients experiencing haemorrhoid symptoms should seek medical attention as soon as possible to avoid these potential complications. With the right treatment plan, most cases of haemorrhoids can be effectively managed, allowing patients to return to their normal activities and quality of life.
