It has been demonstrated that bariatric surgery can improve comorbid diseases that are linked to cardiovascular disease and mortality. Only a few sizable studies specifically evaluated the various bariatric procedures and examined how bariatric surgery affected cardiovascular outcomes.

The study cohort comparing the surgical and nonsurgical groups consisted overweight 328,807 individuals, including 60,445 who had had bariatric surgery and 268,362 matched nonsurgical controls.

According to this study, patients who have bariatric surgery have a considerably decreased long-term risk of MI (0.91% vs 2.79%) and stroke (1.53% vs 3.07%) than nonsurgical controls. It's significant to note that on multivariable regression, surgery by itself was linked to a decreased incidence of this cardiovascular events. Compared to nonsurgical controls, bariatric surgery has a lower risk of serious cardiovascular events. Gastric bypass was found to have a reduced risk of all cardiovascular events in this exploratory analysis than sleeve gastrectomy.
